VII Photo verhuist van Manhattan naar Brooklyn
VII Photo is about to leave Manhattan to join a growing photo community in the trendy Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo.
As a practical matter, the move will give VII a 2,500-square-foot retail space four times the size of its current office. Symbolically, it's another sign that Dumbo (named for its location Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) may become New York's new photo district.
"I'm very happy that I can get more space for the same amount of money," says Frank Evers, VII's general manager. Evers says VII will use its new office as a bookstore and exhibition space, perhaps mounting photo displays in the old industrial warehouse's large windows. The move is planned for December.
Despite Brooklyn's lack of cachet compared to Manhattan, the funkier and more affordable spaces in Dumbo are alluring to photo businesses. Some even see it as a cultural shift for photography, away from the established media and art scenes.
"Fifty-seventh Street and Chelsea are feeling a little establishment these days," Evers says, referring to two art gallery districts in Manhattan.
